1 Put on work gloves to protect your hands during the troubleshooting process. Park the John Deere Sabre model 1642 riding mower on a flat and level surface, and turn off its engine. Brush the mower's entire exterior with a stiff-bristle brush, removing grass, dust, dirt and other debris. Raise the engine's hood, and brush away debris that could cause the engine to run unevenly, hesitate or overheat. Remove grass and other debris from under the cutting deck. That debris could plug the outlet chute. Rinse the entire mower with water from a garden hose, and wipe the mower dry with a clean rag.

3 Sit on the riding mower's seat, set the parking brake and put the transmission in the neutral position. Slide the engine speed, or choke throttle, all the way up to the 'Fast' position. Turn the mower's key to the 'Start' position until the engine starts, but hold the key in that position for no more than five seconds. Release the key to the 'Run' position, and move the engine speed, or choke throttle, to the one-half-speed position. Allow the engine to warm for two to three minutes. If the riding mower still has a problem, then further troubleshooting is necessary. Turn off the engine, and keep it off while troubleshooting.

1 Clean the riding mower's air filters if the engine runs unevenly or loses power. Raise the engine hood, and remove the screw that holds the air filter cover on the air filter housing. Remove the paper filter with the foam prefilter in place around it. Slide the prefilter off the paper filter, and inspect both filters for dirt and damage. Clean the foam prefilter with one or two drops of liquid dish detergent and running water. Rinse and dry the prefilter completely.

Tap the paper filter on a solid surface to remove dust and other debris from the filter. Replace the foam prefilter and paper filter if necessary. Apply a few drops of clean, SAE 10W-30 engine oil to the clean, old or new foam prefilter, and rub the oil into the foam prefilter with your fingers. The oil helps to trap dust. Slide the old or new pre-filter over the paper filter, and install them back in the air filter housing.

Secure the air filter cover in place with the screw you removed from the cover earlier. 2 Inspect the spark plug for damage or debris if the mower is hard to start, will not start, the engine misses under load, the engine backfires or the engine loses power. Pull the spark plug wire from the spark plug's tip, and remove the spark plug from the engine. Examine the spark plug for cracks in its ceramic portion and for excessive scorching. Brush carbon from the spark plug's center diode if the diode is dirty. Replace the spark plug if it is damaged.

Insert the cleaned or replacement spark plug in the mower, and tighten it in place with a spark plug wrench. Connect the spark plug wire securely to the spark plug's tip. 3 Check the engine oil level if the mower's engine overheats, knocks or loses power. Remove the dipstick from the oil fill tube, and wipe the dipstick with a clean rag. Insert the dipstick completely back into the oil fill tube. Pull the dipstick out of the tube again, and read the oil level on the dipstick. The oil level should be in the dipstick's checkered area between the 'Full' and 'Add' marks or levels.

Add SAE 10W-30 engine oil to the oil fill tube to raise the oil level, but do not raise the oil level past the 'Full' level on the dipstick. 4 Check and adjust the tire pressure on the John Deere mower if the cutting blades scalp grass or cut grass unevenly. Remove the air valve caps from the tires by unscrewing them. Measure the air pressure of each tire by pushing one end a tire pressure gauge cleanly onto each tire's air valve, from which you removed the cap. The tire pressure gauge will display the tire's air pressure in pounds per square inch (psi). Add air to each front tire that the tire pressure gauge indicates is below 14 psi.

Add air to each back tire that is below 10 psi. Use an air pump to add air to a tire. Avoid overfilling the tires with air. Screw the air valve caps back on the air valves.

1 Prepare to remove, sharpen and balance the cutting blades if the riding mower vibrates excessively while cutting grass or the blades do not cut grass evenly. Raise the cutting deck to its highest position. Ensure the key is not in the mower's ignition, that the mower engine cannot start and that the mower blades cannot begin to rotate on their own. Place a block of wood against the inside of the cutting deck, and rotate the cutting blades carefully to wedge the wood in place so that the blades cannot move.
