The engine, turbine, or other type of prime mover should be equipped with an overspeed shutdown device to protect against runaway or damage to the prime mover with possible personal injury, loss of life, or property damage. The overspeed shutdown device must be totally independen t of the prime mover control system. An overtemperature or overpressure shutdown device may also be needed for safety, as appropriate.
Woodward UG-25+ The Woodward UG-25+ governor is a microprocessor-controlled, mechanicalhydraulic amplified, governor for controlling diesel, gas, and dual fuel engines, and steam turbines. Enhanced control capabilities, such as start fuel and boost limiting schemes, are an integral part of the UG-25+ governor. The additional transient fuel limiting (jump-rate) improves the engine load acceptance and reduces transient emissions significantly. This fast-acting, high-work-output governor has no need for any auxiliary devices such as a start booster or oil cooler. Two work output versions are available.

The UG-25+ offers speed control with software-selectable speed set points, dynamics, fuel limiting, and start behavior. All it takes is a PC to adjust and download configuration data. Front panel and external speed settings make synchronization and load sharing easy for generator applications. A 4 mA to 20 mA speed setting is available for variable speed applications. Adjustable droop permits load division and balancing among parallel operated prime movers. Droop can be set with a knob on the front panel between 0–10. The load limiter knob allows you to limit the governor output manually.

Woodward UG-8 UG Governors (generally known as the “UG-8”) are available in either a UG Dial or UG Lever configuration. Each model is available with any of three different work outputs: 7.1, 13.2, and 15.9 Nm (5.2, 9.7, and 11.7 lb-ft). The UG-5.7 and UG-8 use 827 kPa (120 psi) operating pressure. The UG-5.7 unit has a reduced area servo piston which produces a quicker response to load changes and reduces overshoots at start up and on major load changes.
The UG-10 uses a 1034 kPa (150 psi) internal operating pressure to produce the higher work output. Dashpot pressure compensation provides governor stability and allows the UG governor to operate in isochronous rather than droop. Droop is available to permit load sharing.

All UG-40 governors have adjustable compensation. A pointer on the governor sets and indicates the amount of compensation.
Compensation allows isochronous speed control. Compensation is temporary. A needle valve sets the speed at which compensation is removed from the governor speed setting. Special damped ballheads and spring-driven drives are available for engines with rough governor drives. Droop is available in UG-40 Governors to allow load sharing between multiple engines or power generation against an infinite bus.
UG-40s have internal, self-contained oil supplies. The governors provide 38° of output shaft travel. Recommended usable rotation is 2/3 of the maximum, or 25°.
